Planet, What’s going on with my food ?

Food is at the heart of our well being. This is why Researchtalks is organizing a panel around agriculture and food on May 13. We are lucky to invite incredible speakers such as Olivier De Schutter, from the UN; Brandon Mitchener, from Monsanto; Claude Pohlig from the Slow Food movement; Alain Laigneaux from the Belgian Development Agency; Christian Hermans from the Lab of plants physiology of the ULB; and Alok Nandi, organizer of Pecha Kucha Brussels.

They will talk about agroecology, biotechnologies for a sustainable agriculture, rural development of Third World countries, the science of biofortification and the ethics and aesthetics of food. After listening to their ideas and knowledge, you’ll get a chance to exchange with the panel during a discussion-debate and to network around a drink and food.

Researchtalks idea is to discover new things, meet interesting people, and to shareknowledge. Join us for this event on food and agriculture on May 13, 2013! Registration is free but mandatory. Book your seat via http://www.researchtalks.com

AGENDA

19.00 – 19.30: Welcome (be on time!)
19:30 – 21:00: Talks

Brandon Mitchener: What is Sustainable Agriculture? Using technology to improve food, agriculture and people’s lives

Christian Hermans: Crop biofortification: a solution to human malnutrition?

Olivier De Schutter: Agroecology as a new agricultural model

Alok Nandi: Ethics & Aesthetics – Food Systems & Urban Stories

21:00 – 21:45: Discussion
21:45 – 23:45: Networking drink

…
Ethics & Aesthetics – Food Systems & Urban Stories
Alok Nandi

Hundreds of years ago, the Hindu scriptures Upanishads were already mentioning ‘You are what you eat’, and more closely in Europe, in 1826, Anthelme Brillat-Savarin wrote, in Physiologie du Goût, ou Méditations de Gastronomie Transcendante: ‘Dis-moi ce que tu manges, je te dirai ce que tu es.’ Tell me what you eat and I will tell you what you are.
If design allows ‘transformation of existing conditions into preferred ones’ (Herbert Simon), ‘cuisine’ is interesting to put next to it, close to it, into it, or vice-versa. Especially as a process but also as a space (and a non-space), it might ensure that thinking and talking about ‘design as cuisine’ or vice-versa results into reframing making and consuming.
This “Foodmood” talk will look into some food systems in urban settings and raise ethical as well as aesthetical questions.

Radio Interview on Indian Cinema, 100 years, Bollywood, on Belgian Radio La Première: Le Grand Mag, May 6th, at 9:30 am w/ Laurent Dehossay and Caroline Veyt. In French.

What’s in a name? A view on America… Amsterdam Stories USA is a road-movie tracing 15 small places in the United States, all of them named Amsterdam. Two Dutch descent filmmakers, Rogier van Eck & Rob Rombout, cross the country from East to West Coast, from their arrival in New York (former Nieuw Amsterdam) to California.

Through encounters and stories of the Amsterdams and of the road in between, this long and arbitrary adventure progressively weaves a singular image of the provincial and unknown « small town » America. The result is an intimate portrait and radiography of a protean country.

This 6-hour feature length documentary is divided in 4 chapters of 90 minutes each: EAST – SOUTH – MIDWEST – WEST.

The film was selected for IDFA’s 25th edition (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam 2012).

Programne:
Friday 18.01
19:30 Part I: East (95’)

Saturday 19.01
19:30 Part II: South (87’)
21:30 Part III: Midwest (85’)

Sunday 20.01
11:00 Part IV: West (90’)
12:30 Q&A with the directors led by Alok Nandi

19:30 Partie I : East (95’)

Samedi 19.01

Update: Interaction14 will take place Feb. 5 to 8, 2014, in Amsterdam. For more about Interaction Design Association – check www.ixda.org

It has just been announced on IxDA ! I am honoured to be trusted by the Interaction Design Association. Join the conversation at Interaction14 and before for its preparation :

On behalf of the IxDA Board of Directors, it is with great pleasure that we announce Alok Nandi as Chair of Interaction14, to be held February, 2014 in Amsterdam in conjunction with Utrecht School of the Arts and Delft University of Technology.

Alok was selected from a short list of candidates following an open call for nominations from the IxDA community.

The call for Chair of the Interaction conference resulted in more than 30 qualified submissions – a measure of the depth of talent and willingness to take on key volunteer leadership roles within our global IxDA community. Thank you to everyone who made the commitment to put their name forward for consideration.

The review panel included our Treasurer, MJ Broadbent, Director Séamus Byrne, our Executive Director Brenda Sanderson and myself. Drawing on the collective experience as past chairs of Interaction11 and Interaction12 within the panel, we were unanimous in our decision. Alok brings a combination of experience and enthusiasm to the role and we were inspired by his broad vision of interaction design practice.

Amsterdam

Interaction14 will be the second IxDA conference to be held in Europe, following from the successful staging of Interaction12 in Dublin, Ireland earlier this year. It will take place in Amsterdam in February 2014.

IxDA Netherland, along with Utrecht School of the Arts and Delft University of Technology, put forward a comprehensive proposal that received the unanimous support of the IxDA Board. Alok has named Yohan Creemers, Chair of IxDA Netherland and a member of the Dutch bid team, as his Co-Chair for Interaction14.

Welcome and congratulations, Alok and Yohan! The IxDA community is honored to have you take up this challenge and we look forward to meeting in Amsterdam in February 2014.

Regards,

Steve Baty
President, IxDA

*** Registrations are currently open for Interaction13. For more details please see http://interaction13.ixda.org/ ***

Interaction Design (IxD) defines the structure and behavior of interactive systems. Interaction Designers strive to create meaningful relationships between people and the products and services that they use, from computers to mobile devices to appliances and beyond. Our practices are evolving with the world …

We believe that the human condition is increasingly challenged by poor experiences. IxDA intends to improve the human condition by advancing the discipline of Interaction Design. To do this, we foster a community of people that choose to come together to support this intention. IxDA relies on individual initiative, contribution, sharing and self-organization as the primary means for us to achieve our goals.

IxDA relies on its passionate members to help serve the needs of the international Interaction Design community. With more than 30,000 members and over 120 local groups around the world, the IxDA network actively focuses on interaction design issues for the practitioner, no matter their level of experience.

IxDA was founded in 2003 and incorporated as a not-for-profit in late 2005. Today, the IxDA is involved in initiatives relating to the following core topics:
